The Cupboard Under the Stairs is a blog about the struggles to use art in a useful way. The name of the blog is because the cupboard under the stairs is where most of the painting and sketches end up - in my case there is also under the bed, tucked in books, in the loft, an old box on which the telly sits and countless draws and shelves. Its getting silly. So this is a new space to encourage me the keep moving forwards.

The next thing :os
The next thing that I shouldn't have already started.
Someone really should slap me round the back of the head (please don't though). I keep losing faith in the projects I start and start new ones only to lose faith in them. Between my counting book and this idea I have started two other books, planned another book and re-visited a book I made but rejected :o(
What a mess.
These are two sketches of the next idea. It should be simple book and therefore shouldn't take too long, but this is not the case. I keep thinking it's too easy and that I should do more with it ahhhh!!!
Anyway hopefully putting these sketches on here will work as a little promise to myself make the thing.
Late Halloween ;o)
Happy Halloween (belated)
It was great this year because Lily was old enough to be excited about it. We fed trick or treaters and I even dressed her up in a little second hand witchy dress and hat - next year I'll make the costume.
I am creating a book at the moment which is simply a counting book, but it has been driving me made as I just want a white background and whenever I scan the paper comes out weird. I am also doing at least two other books becoz I keep getting ideas, which means I never finish anything :o(
I am really thinking of doing a course I have always wanted to - it sounds stupid, but I'm a bit scared to :os what if it all goes wrong???
Anyway, thought I'd share a couple of pics. I did not enjoy drawing skeletons - it felt like science - they are in shoes becoz I didn't even want to attempt skeleton feet :os though I quite like skeletons in shoes, why not?
I hope you think they're ok. The toads are my favorites.

Witch, cats and monsters
Here are more witch pictures :o)
As you can see I'm having some trouble with the paper at the moment, which isn't stretching probably and gets all wrinkled it has meant doing a lot of work on the computer to make it look normal when I put the pages together.
More cats as promised
And a big pumpkin. The first picture I did of this the pupkin was about four times as big it looked crazy, but in the end I went for a smaller pumpkin as I liked his face better small.
Been drawing monsters too and got told off by my dad for making them (and the bat) look cute :o(
But I like monsters like this.
This little chap is my fav . His name is Remy

Witchy - new drawings
New idea :os
These are a few of the new pics. I have been working pretty fast on these - really hope it doesn't show, I'm always messy anyway...
I loved drawing the toads, got lucky with that as well, as me and Lily found a little toad the other day on a walk. He looked a bit like the one on the left.
Enjoying cake - this is how I look when eating cake.
Designing dresses I want to wear.
Going to be more drawings of cats - sneeze Jen!
And getting to grips with drawing bats :os
I'm having fun with it, it's going to be quite simple this one.

Art Dump 2
These pictures were from one of the first books I put together. I'm afraid looking back at them now I have come to realise that I'm probably crazy.
Again the story let me down - it just wasn't as much fun as the pictures.
I love drawing animals and I learnt to draw cats in English A'level class. I used to draw them over my friend Jen's work along with the word SNEEZE- she's allergic. I don't think she thought much of this, neither did our teacher. Happy Days.
This one above was inspired by my mum's cat Mop. He designs hats... :os
Actually am quite an odd person :os
But again characters I love. I remember sending this off somewhere and knowing I wasn't happy with it. Its hard to know what to do when the story doesn't come together - should you move on or keep trying?
Art Dump 1
Perhaps not the most attractive way of putting it, but I'm really just dumping some art that I have had for a while. I wrote a little story for these characters sometime ago...
...it was awful.
It was far too rushed and I really just need to start again. I'm putting them out here because I really quite like these characters and wanted to share them.
I feel really guilty I didn't spend much time on them :o(
I will try and make it up to them :o)

More Lily-inspired pics
These are some more pictures from the book that I'm making. Most of these come from photos, which in A'level fine art I was told was not the 'done thing', but sod it.
Lily has been loads of fun to draw. I have done sketches of her - mostly when she's asleep - but for a lot of these I have used photos as a guide. I don't draw the photos exactly as I'm rubbish at that and it takes the fun out of it. I also think what's the point of making a painting which looks like a photo - well unless your Chuck Close - and I think you capture something being a bit less precise - not sure what though :os
Lily is very good at having her photo taken :o)
This last one is the last page of the book. It's a very messy sort of book I'm not a tidy person and I think it sort of reflects Lily as well who utterly enjoys mess.

My Muse
Have spent the last couple of months working on a book for Lily, where I have done loads of watercolour pictures of her (over 20) and then scrapbooked them.
These are some rough copies so far and not the end result, mostly because I decided to work on A3 so she would have an A4 book at the end of it. A3 is imposible to scan so I'll try and take pictures to show you end result, because - for once - I am quite proud of it.
My biggest problem now is getting the photocopies and making it into a boardbook for her and it HAS to be a board book as she will destroy it otherwise the little scamp :o)

pictures for music
Last month I was set a task of creating pictures for a CD cover :os I'm not really sure that I'm at all suited to the task, but these are what I came up with :os
This top one is my fav. Though really don't know that it has anything to do with the music involved :os
This one is a little more relevant as the CD is called Cinderella and you can't see it but she is holding a shoe. The shoe I drew looked dreadful :os
I don't much like this one.
These two were sort of practice and have absolutely nothing to do with the music.
On the whole not a great success. Maybe someone will airbrush them.

A Picture Book
I am currently running around like a blue arsed fly - Lily is having a nap. So its a race against the clock whether I will finish this post.
This last month I have been working on a picture book. I like it, though I'm not really happy with it yet, but I am very impatient and want to be on with the next thing. Sometimes I feel like trashing it, but I am quite proud of it for a month's work.
It's not the most astonishing story, but bumbles along quite happily and I have tried to do a couple of things differently in the design. I'm going to send it somewhere and will probably keep going back to it :os
Just have to make sure it doesn't end up under the stairs.
